Weaving Demostration

Schedule

Mon – Sun 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Hours negotiable for large groups. Please contact us with questions.

Description

The first weavers center, the Away Riqcharicheq Weaving Association in Chinchero, a community located about 45 minutes outside the city of Cusco on the highway to Urubamba, is home to the original group of weavers who started the CTTC. Learn from the masters about the art of weaving in the Andes and browse the CTTC store where you can directly support the weavers through the purchase of their fine textiles.

We invite you to participate in a Weaving Demonstration to learn firsthand how weavers turn alpaca and sheep wool into fine textiles. Beginning with spinning and moving through each step of the weaving process, watch as the women of the Away Weaving Association show you how they work their magic. Discover the rainbow of colors that natural dyes produce and gain a greater appreciation for the long hours that go into each textile as the weavers show you how to warp, weave and finally finish with the unique ñawi awapa border technique.

How to get to Chinchero from the city of Cusco:

Buses, minivans, and collective taxis leave almost every 15 minutes from various garages that cluster around Calle Pavitos and Calle Belen. The ride is about 45 minutes and costs between S/.2.50 to S/.6 depending on which option you elect to travel with. The large buses are less expensive but slower, the collective taxis are more expensive but faster. Once you arrive in Chinchero, get off on the last bus stop in Chinchero called Paradero Entel. (You will see a large, red sign advertising the archeological site at the stop you should get off at). There will be a paved street to your right. Go up the street, take the first left onto Manzanares Street, and you will find the Away Weaving Association one minute down the hill on your left-hand side. The building is light orange with a large, blue CTTC sign.
